South San Francisco, CA   July 24, 2018  Submitted by David Burruto Today, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved a grant for $75,600 for the Sign Hill Habitat Restoration Project by the City of South San Francisco. Sign Hill, geographically located in South San Francisco and geologically a part of San Bruno Mountain, is home to over 70 endangered and ecologically critical species of botanical life. The presence of several species of invasive plants threatens the existence of the existing Sign Hill ecosystem, which also is a habitat for several species of endangered butterfly. The grant will provide funding from San Mateo County’s ½-cent sales tax Measure K to restore and maintain the Sign Hill habitat. “Sign Hill is an incredibly valuable natural asset but the biodiversity of the area is threatened by invasive species,” said Dave Pine, President of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. “This grant will build on existing efforts to restore the natural habitat and support populations of endangered species.” The City of South San Francisco will oversee the hiring of a project coordinator responsible for the identification of species to be replaced, and a park aide to conduct maintenance of the facilities and […]

South San Francisco, CA   August 6, 2018 Submitted by Kirsten Andrews-Schwind, Peninsula Clean Energy Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE) is offering San Mateo County residents free test drives in a selection of electric vehicles (EVs) on August 11th at the Facebook Summer Jam Festival in Menlo Park.   “We are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and transportation is the main contributor to emissions in this county. Electric vehicles offer drivers a clean, convenient alternative to gas-powered cars,” said Jan Pepper, CEO of Peninsula Clean Energy. PCE provides 290,000 San Mateo County customers with cleaner energy at lower rates than they previously received from PG&E.   The test drive events are part of PCE’s new Go Electric campaign to make electric vehicles more affordable and easy to charge throughout the County. “Every dollar spent to power an electric vehicle takes you more than twice as far as a dollar’s worth of fuel in an average gas-powered vehicle,” said Pepper. “Residents who try one out will see that electric cars are great fun to drive and offer attractive range, comfort, and cost.”   An electric vehicle can save a driver more than $1,200 a year in fuel and maintenance costs compared to a typical […]

Still some geese keeping watch.   “I don’t know for sure if the water department is doing some work back there so I don’t know if it’s on their property way back near the canal.” our neighbor said. “I don’t the Geese mind, as long as no building replaces their temporary watering hole.”  Enjoy the sounds of these sweet visitors on the YouTube below.

INTERESTED IN PERFORMING AT THIS OPEN MIC? CALL OR EMAIL: 650-363-4572 or mrichardson@smcgov.org   Mental illness is an issue we must discuss in our community considering the rate of people diagnosed with a mental illness has increased rapidly. While suicide is the third leading cause of death in youth ages 10-24 and 90 percent of youth who died by suicide had an underlying mental illness yet there are many cases that have gone unnoticed. As a community, it is our duty to prevent and help others who may show signs of mental illness. It is crucial that we start a conversation about mental health with our friends and family […]
